Chapter 197: Last One The Code That Saved Him
Chapter 197: Last One The Code That Saved Him
Tony walked past him, throwing his jacket onto a chair, his face grim. "No."
"This is absolutely terrible," Kevin exclaimed, pacing the floor and wringing his hands. "Where could he possibly be? Who would do something like this?"
He turned to Matteo, his voice thick with false concern.
"And you guys still don’t want to inform the police?"
Matteo stopped in the middle of the room, his eyes turning pitch-black as he fixed Kevin with a terrifying stare.
"How am I supposed to kill the person behind this if I involve the police?" he asked, his voice deadly calm and chillingly low.
A dangerous silence followed.
"The fate of whoever dared to abduct Adrian is in my hands. I will kill them myself... And not just them. Every single person connected to them will burn."
Hearing that, Kevin visibly stammered, a sudden flash of real terror breaking through his mask. He quickly swallowed the lump in his throat, forcing a nervous nod. "E-exactly. You should definitely do that."
The entire estate was gripped by a suffocating dread. No one could sleep. The dining area and living room were packed with Matteo’s heavily armed men, and the air was thick with tension.
At this point, Mark couldn’t even bring himself to tell his brother to calm down. Once Charles and Frank heard what had happened, panic spread among everyone close to Matteo and Adrian. More than twenty-four hours had passed, and Adrian was still nowhere to be found. No one knew what was going to happen next.
Matteo stood by the window, completely consumed by guilt. He stared out into the darkness, silently blaming himself for the nightmare unfolding around him.
It’s my fault, he thought bitterly. Whatever Adrian is going through right now, I caused it. I should never have let him leave.
As the hours dragged on, Matteo sank onto a chair in the living room. Tony, Mark, Kevin, and the rest of the inner circle were still gathered there, none of them willing to leave Matteo alone.
Running out of options, Matteo decided to call his father. Maybe the older man’s connections could uncover something they had overlooked.
But just as he raised his phone to make the call, an unknown number flashed across the screen.
Matteo grabbed the phone immediately and put it on speakerphone. Everyone in the room leaned in, straining to hear while keeping completely silent.
"Are you enjoying the game?" the same woman’s voice from earlier purred mockingly through the speaker.
Matteo forced his body to relax, his voice dropping into a smooth, calculated drawl.
"How can I enjoy the game when I’m not even sure you’re the one who actually has him? At least let him say a single word to me so I know the game is officially on."
The line went silent for a few agonizing seconds.
"Since you want to be so sure," the woman finally relented, "I’ll let you speak to him." A moment later, the sound of shuffling clothes came through, followed by the heavy, ragged breathing of Adrian. "Speak," the woman commanded on her end.
Matteo didn’t waste time on pointless questions. Hearing Adrian’s weak breathing felt like a knife twisting in his chest, but he kept his voice steady.
"Say it."
A faint, agonizing silence followed.
Then Adrian’s voice came through low, hoarse, and barely above a whisper.
"Last one."
The moment those two words left Adrian’s mouth, the call abruptly ended.
On the other side, Kelly immediately turned to him.
"What the fuck does ’Last one’ mean?" he snapped, stepping toward Adrian.
Adrian simply smiled at him.
He said nothing.
But inside the living room, the moment "last one" left Adrian’s lips, the atmosphere fractured. Every single bodyguard in the room instantly recognized the signal. It was a pre-established code.
In a split second, Tony drew his weapon and pointed it directly at Kevin’s head. Simultaneously, the sound of dozens of guns being unsheathed echoed through the room as every guard raised their weapons, aiming straight at Kevin.
Matteo marched across the room like a demon unleashed. Without a single word, he delivered a devastating, backhanded slap across Kevin’s face. The sheer force of the blow sent Kevin crashing hard onto the floor.
"On your knees," Matteo growled.
Kevin scrambled upright and dropped to his knees, clutching his bleeding lip. Genuine panic flooded his face as tears spilled from his eyes.
"Matteo, why did you hit me?" he stammered. "I don’t understand what’s going on!"
Matteo slowly drew his own custom pistol, the heavy click of the safety being disengaged echoing in the silent room. He stepped closer, pressing the cold barrel directly against Kevin’s forehead.
"You might think I’m stupid for never teaching Adrian how to fight or handle weapons," Matteo said, his voice a lethal, deadpan whisper that made Kevin tremble violently. "I never taught him how to use a gun for reasons I keep to myself."
He stared down at Kevin.
"But I taught him something far more useful."
His eyes turned ice-cold. "I taught him how to speak without saying much. I taught him how to use a code."
Matteo leaned in, his eyes drilling into Kevin’s soul.
"So now I’m going to ask you one question. Where is Adrian? You get one chance to answer me. If I don’t get the truth in three seconds, I will blow your fucking head off right here."
Kevin froze, a cold shock paralyzing his chest. He couldn’t believe it. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine he would be caught this quickly, let alone by a simple two-word code. Panic completely shattered his carefully constructed mask. Facing the barrel of the gun, he closed his eyes tightly, his body shaking.
Matteo didn’t hesitate. His finger tightened on the trigger as he began the countdown in a flat, merciless voice.
"Three."
Kevin’s breathing hitched, sweat pouring down his neck.
"Two."
Tony and the rest of the guards moved in closer, their weapons locked onto him, leaving no room for escape.
"One."
Matteo stiffened his arm, intentionally making the distinct click of the gun’s mechanism ring out as if he were about to fire.
The terrifying sound broke Kevin completely. His eyes snapped open in absolute horror, and he screamed at the top of his lungs, "Please! Don’t kill me! I’ll speak! I’ll tell you everything!"
